Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes the costs, revenues, profitability, and factors influencing the profitability of live broiler chicken traders at the Central Market of Mimika Regency. The locally sourced supply chain from Timika farmers reduces logistics costs and enhances profitability.
Research Methodology: A census method was applied to 20 registered traders. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, observation, and documentation. Analysis included income analysis, profitability indicators (R/C Ratio, BEP, ROI, GPM, NPM, ROA, ROE), and profitability factor assessment.
Results: Average monthly costs reached IDR 153.08 million, dominated by chicken purchases (92.1%), while revenues reached IDR 192.11 million, generating profits of IDR 39.03 million/month. The business achieved R/C = 1.255, ROI = 60.05%/month, and a 93% safety margin. A 1–3 day holding period produced optimal margins up to 24.3%. Key profitability factors included purchase price, holding duration, transportation costs, feed costs, sales volume, chicken quality, and consumer purchasing power.
Conclusions: Live broiler chicken trading in Mimika is financially feasible and highly profitable due to short supply chains, low logistics costs, strong demand, and effective holding management.
Limitations: The study is limited to 20 traders at Pasar Sentral Mimika, informal financial records, cross-sectional data, and unseparated household expenses.
Contributions: This study provides the first multi-indicator profitability analysis of live broiler chicken trading in Mimika Regency and documents the profitability advantage of locally sourced supply chains and holding-period optimization.
